June 17, 2013 Rep. Slaughter Urges President Obama to Consider Limits on Antibiotic Use on Livestock at G8 SummitWASHINGTON – Last week, House Rules Committee Ranking Member Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY) sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to pay special attention to the issues of antibiotic resistance at this week’s Group of Eight (G8) summit in Northern Ireland, and to consider limiting the use of antibiotics on healthy food animals. Recently, Britain’s Science Minister David Willetts has raised questions about the overuse of antibiotics in food animals and its contribution to the worldwide antibiotic resistance crisis. Congresswoman Slaughter, the only microbiologist in Congress, has authored the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA), which would prohibit the routine use of eight critical classes of antibiotics on healthy food animals, and would save these critical drugs for the treatment of humans and sick animals. |

June 17, 2013 New York Times Sunday Letter: Judicial Ethics on the Supreme CourtOn Sunday, June 16, 2013, Louise wrote a letter with her colleagues, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT), to the editors of The New York Times. In the letter, Louise called on the Supreme Court to adopt a binding code of ethics and restore transparency and integrity to the Supreme Court. Soon, Louise will be introducing legislation in the House of Representatives to apply the binding Code of Conduct for United States Judges to the Supreme Court. Currently, the Code of Conduct for United States Judges applies to every federal judge except the nine members of the highest court in the land.
